Goddess Enchantment

One of the most potent goddesses is Hecate, the Goddess of the crossroads. She was very popular in Greece and Rome, and is represented as a triple Goddess - three women joined at the back and facing in three directions. She holds two lit torches in her hands and has snakes entwined around her feet, representing transformation. Hecate dwells in the underworld, and with her burning torches she guides the dead through the darkness of the underworld into the afterlife. Therefore she became known as the Goddess of the dead, especially of those who died before their time.

In modern times you can ask Hecate to guide those that have passed over but also to help the living, especially the bereaved who are walking in emotional darkness. In ancient times people used to make offerings to the Hecate at the crossroads. They would take a cake surrounded by lit torches and ask for their wish to be granted, then leave the cake at the crossroads, and walk away without looking back. The cake would then be eaten by wolves, which created an associated between Hecate and the wolf. This tradition has survived today and is the origin of our birthday cakes lit by candles.

Hecate is also the Goddess of sorcery and magic and has been adopted by modern witches, who also see her triple aspect as a representation of the Maiden, Mother and Crone. Her third main aspect is that she is the Goddess of psychic intuition.
